There are millions, yes you read that right, MILLIONS of homeless dogs and cats in shelters in the United States.
Approximately 6.5 million companion animals
enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year. - ASPCA.org
While that is a HUGE number, and can vary by the source, the amount of homeless animals that die in shelters will leave you in tears. Over 23% of them, about 1.5 million, will die because they are not re-claimed by their owners or adopted out to a loving family.
Each year, approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized
(670,000 dogs and 860,000 cats). - ASPCA.org
That number hurts the heart quite a bit..
The good news is you can help make a dent in that amount by bringing a loving animal into your home and keeping them safe.
You may have seen the phrase Adopt Don't Shop. That means choosing to adopt a pet from a shelter or rescue who are doing their best to find loving homes, versus a breeder or pet store whose main purpose is to make a profit off the sale of an animal.
We are NOT saying that all breeders and pet stores are bad or have ill intentions BUT Voice of Rescue believes that to truly make a difference in the lives of many animals it is important to look first at where those animals that truly NEED a home are, and provide that to them.
How people adopt their pets has changed over the years, and in a positive way with over 40% finding their fur baby from word of mouth. That means champions like yourself are spreading the word and helping rescues and shelters find a home. Go you!
How Adopting | Dogs | Cats |
Animal Shelter/Humane Society | 23% | 31% |
Friends/Relatives | 20% | 28% |
Breeder | 34% | 3% |
Stray | 6% | 27% |
Private Party | 12% | 6% |
Other | 32% | 39% |
According to the ASPCA this information was based on a multiple response question,
which results in the total % exceeding 100% individually for cats and dogs.
You CAN find younger animals in local shelters and rescues. Unfortunately due to animals not being spayed and neutered there are large populations of kittens and puppies each breeding season and shelters/rescues have their hands full trying to find enough homes for them to survive and thrive.
You CAN find "pure breeds" in local shelters and rescues. Heck there are rescues out there that ONLY work with certain breeds, because they are experts in helping adopters and fosters be as successful as possible handling them.
